New lodging to open in 2021

SOUTH RIM, GRAND CANYON — April 25, 2019 — Grand Canyon South Rim is getting a “birthday present” for its Centennial: as part of its concession contract with the National Park Service (NPS), Xanterra Travel Collection® is investing $30 million to rebuild the Maswik South Lodging complex at South Rim. The existing 90 rooms, constructed in 1971, will be replaced with 120 new lodging units within four new lodging structures in the same general location. The new Maswik guest lodging is anticipated to open in 2021.

The new units will greatly improve the guest experience adding new amenities to the two-story structures including private balconies, elevators and interior hallway entrances. In addition to the 90 standard rooms, 30 kitchenette units will be offered. Maswik Lodging is in close proximity to Maswik Lodge where guests can access the Maswik Food Court, Pizza Pub, Transportation & Activities Desk, and the blue park shuttle line.

Xanterra Travel Collection®’s stewardship of national parks and long-standing commitment to conservation informed the building’s sustainable design. Built to LEED Silver standards, the design includes the extensive use of sustainable building materials, high-efficiency lighting, mechanical and plumbing fixtures, use of reclaimed water, and Dark Sky compliant lighting that ensure that the lodges don’t interrupt the stargazing experience at the Grand Canyon.

“This is the first major lodging improvement to take place in decades at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and we’re underway during the Centennial year of Grand Canyon National Park, which makes the investment all the more momentous,” said Mia Bell, General Manager of Grand Canyon, South Rim who is overseeing the project. “The buildings served countless visitors for nearly 50 years and the new construction will offer a lodging option that meets the needs of many of our guests. We are proud to be a part of enhancing the national park experience, preparing it for the next 100 years.”

Working closely with Xanterra and NPS project team, OZ Architecture is the architect of record for the project. Kinney Construction Services (KCS) from Flagstaff, Arizona is the project’s General Contractor.

Advance reservations for the new lodging units can be made starting in 2021. Please follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and this website for further updates on this project.
